4 Brand Positioning Mistakes That Are Silently Sabotaging Your Growth (and How to Fix Them)

Brand positioning is one of the most misunderstood strategies in business.

Most entrepreneurs and business owners believe positioning means choosing a market category and occupying it. But that's just the surface. Real brand positioning is the reason someone would choose you over every other available option. And the majority of brands are getting it wrong.

Here are the 4 most common brand positioning mistakes I see in my brand consulting work — and, more importantly, how to fix them.

Mistake 1: Positioning Yourself for Everyone

"Our product is for everyone." This is the death sentence of any strategic positioning.

When you try to speak to everyone, you speak to no one. When your brand doesn't have a clearly defined ideal client, your communication becomes generic, your offer becomes vague, and your brand becomes just another option in the noise.

The mistake isn't wanting to attract many clients. The mistake is believing that to attract many, you need to speak vaguely to all.

How to fix it: Define with surgical precision who your brand is speaking to. Not a demographic range — a real person, with a specific problem, at a particular moment in their life. When you speak directly to that person, paradoxically, far more people feel seen and understood.

Mistake 2: Positioning on Price

"We're the most affordable option in the market." This positioning puts you in the most exhausting and least profitable race that exists.

Competing on price is a strategy only the most operationally efficient company can win. If that's not you, there will always be someone willing to charge less.

Additionally, low price sends a signal of low value. People pay more for brands they trust, brands that solve their problem in a superior way, brands that make them feel something specific.

How to fix it: Identify the real value you deliver beyond price. What transformation does your product or service create? What problem do you solve better than anyone else? Position yourself on that value — not on your rate.

Mistake 3: Copying Your Competitor's Positioning

"We're going to do what the market leader does, but cheaper or faster." This strategy condemns you to living in someone else's shadow.

When you copy a competitor's positioning, you're competing on their territory, by their rules, with the inherent advantage of being the original. You can never win by being a lesser version of someone else.

The brands that grow the most aren't the ones competing on the same dimensions as everyone else. They're the ones who find a different dimension where they're unmatched.

How to fix it: Instead of asking "how can I do what my competitor does better?", ask "what can I do that my competitor can't or won't do?" That's where your real competitive advantage lives.

Mistake 4: Inconsistency Between What You Say and What You Do

You can have the most brilliant positioning strategy on paper, but if your brand doesn't live it at every customer touchpoint, it doesn't exist.

This is perhaps the most common and the hardest to fix — because it requires internal work, not just external polish.

If you position yourself as a premium brand but have mediocre customer service, people will feel it. If you position yourself as an expert but your content is shallow, no one will believe it. If you position yourself as authentic but your communication feels forced, your audience will sense it.

How to fix it: Audit every touchpoint of your brand. Does your website, your social media, the way you respond to messages, your sales process, your after-sale experience — does everything communicate the same thing? Is everything aligned with the positioning you claim to have? Where you find gaps, that's where the work is.

Brand Positioning Is a Promise

Your brand positioning is a promise you make to your client. A promise of who you are, what you solve, how you do it, and why they should choose you.

And like all promises, it has to be real. It has to be backed by what you genuinely are and what you genuinely do.

Positioning isn't a theoretical exercise. It's the foundation on which everything else is built. And getting it right changes everything about how your brand grows.
